This warm, curated gallery wall brings together six beautiful art pieces currently available in our vintage and antique shop.
Featuring a thoughtful blend of original antique engravings, drawings, and reproduction prints, this collection achieves a layered, collected aesthetic rich in character, warmth, and history. With no original paintings included in the arrangement, it also serves as a reminder that a beautiful and engaging gallery wall can be built from all kinds of artwork.
About the Look.
Like all of our styled looks, we believe in intentionality. Rather than overcrowding a wall, shelf, or piece of furniture with tons of vintage and antique pieces, we favor a thoughtful, edited approach that allows each item to be fully appreciated.
For this look, we selected six pieces from the shop that work beautifully together as a cohesive collection.
The first piece we selected is also our favorite: this beautiful Antique Engraving of Don Juan de Austria.
A truly stunning piece in its own right, this 17th-century engraving brings an undeniable sense of history, character, and authenticity to this gallery wall.
As both a work of art and a tangible piece of the past, it serves as a natural focal point within the collection.
The framing is equally noteworthy. A warm greige mat and substantial bronze-toned frame complement the engraving beautifully. While the frame features ornate detailing, its clean, straight edges feel more refined than the heavily scrolling profiles often associated with antique and antique-inspired framing. These details create a look that feels both timeless and approachable.
Next, we paired a surprising piece that many collectors may be inclined to overlook while sourcing: a Framed Reproduction Print on Board of The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals.
We have always believed there can be a place for quality reproductions in a thoughtfully curated collection. While we certainly value original works and investment pieces, we are ultimately drawn to pieces we genuinely love, and sometimes that means bringing home a well-executed reproduction when we come across it.
For us, portraits have always held a special appeal, and The Laughing Cavalier is no exception.
This portrait brings a beautiful sense of depth and presence to the arrangement. The dark, moody tones naturally draw the eye, while the chunky, warm-toned wood frame complements the bronze tones of the Don Juan engraving beautifully.
Together, these two pieces help anchor the gallery wall, creating a warm, grounded foundation to build the rest of the collection around.
Next, to bring a bit of a lighter feel to the gallery wall and to balance the visual weight of the larger artwork, we incorporated two additional pieces: an Antique Steel Engraving of Martha Washington and a reproduction print of the antique etching Long Voyage Ahead by E. W. Cooke.
The Steel Engraving of Martha Washington in smaller is scale, featuring a beautiful dark wood frame and generously sized ivory matting. This is especially important in this gallery wall look because it creates an important contrast to the much fuller presentation of the Laughing Cavalier portrait above, which ultimately prevents the gallery wall from feeling too visually heavy.
Long Voyage Ahead brings a different energy altogether. We have always loved ship paintings and prints for their timeless appeal, and this one is no exception.
Compared to the portraits and more detailed works throughout this gallery wall look, the artwork itself feels simpler and more open. The clean lines of the ship offer a slight change of pace, intentionally giving the eye a place to rest while simultaneously adding variety to the gallery wall as a whole.
Additionally, the woven-pattern and warm bronze tones of the Long Voyage Ahead frame add subtle texture while tying beautifully into the warmth found throughout the collection.
Finally, to complete the arrangement, we added two smaller works: a Hand-Tinted Photo of a Woman by a Hearth and an Original Antique Ink Drawing.
Because of their smaller scale, these works play an important role in continuing to balance out the collection as a whole. Both feature beautiful warm tones, intricate details, and intentional framing that contribute beautifully to the layered, collected feel of the gallery wall.
Although each piece featured in this collection varies in style and subject matter, their shared warm undertones create a subtle connection that brings the arrangement together as a whole.
A mix of frame sizes and styles adds visual interest throughout, while varied matting and image proportions create balance and rhythm.
More than anything, this arrangement shows that a successful gallery wall is built on thoughtful connections rather than perfectly matched pieces or specific mediums.
When carefully curated, lithographs, engravings, etchings, drawings, and other beautiful works can be just as impactful.
