Natural elements like dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, and pinecones are holiday staples for a vintage-style Christmas. They add fullness, texture, and variety to your decor, creating layers that feel timeless and beautifully charming.
Dried oranges, in particular, are one of my favorites. Their simple beauty brings warmth and nostalgia to the season, pairing beautifully with fresh greenery for a look that feels classic and naturally festive.
I love hanging them from the tree or tucking them into garlands and centerpieces to add a small detail that instantly evokes an old-world feel.
If you’re hoping to capture a hint of old-world charm this holiday, natural elements are a budget-friendly way to achieve it—and dried oranges are among the best!
Here’s how I make mine.
Materials Needed.
3-5 oranges of various sizes (I used navel oranges)
paper towel
Kitchen Tools Used.
Chef’s Knife
Cutting Board
Step-by-Step Instructions.
Preheat the oven to 250°F.
Remove any stickers from your oranges and slice them thinly (about 1/8–1/4 inch thick).
→ I was able to get around 7–8 slices per orange.
Blot the slices with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
Line a baking sheet with wax paper and arrange the slices in a single layer.
Bake for 3–4 hours.
→Pro Tip: Check every hour. Thinner slices may be ready at around 3 hours, while thicker ones may need closer to 4. You’ll know they’re done when they’ve shrunk slightly and the centers are fully dried.
Inspiration and Ideas From My Home.
Once dried, your oranges are ready to be sprinkled throughout your home for the holidays!
Over the years, I’ve styled them in so many ways, but a few favorites include layering them into a tablescape, tucking them along the mantel, or hanging them from the tree.
No matter where you place them, dried oranges bring warmth, charm, and a timeless touch to holiday decor.
